On May 28, 2024, the Southern Double Long Hynix ETF (07709.HK) hit an all-time high of 12.74 HKD. By October 31, it had fallen to 2.41 HKD – an 81% drawdown in five months. The underlying stock, SK Hynix, dropped only 45% over the same period. The 2x ETF delivered 1.8x the loss on paper but inflicted far more pain through a silent killer: volatility decay. Let’s look at the data.

Context
Leveraged products – whether traditional ETFs or crypto’s leveraged tokens – promise amplified returns but hide a structural flaw: daily rebalancing. Each day, the product resets its leverage to 2x. In a volatile market, this creates a compounding drag that erodes value faster than the underlying moves. I’ve audited over 30 crypto leveraged tokens since 2021, building Dune dashboards to track their rebalancing costs. The same dynamics apply here. Southern Asset Management’s ETF is a perfect case study to verify the decay.
Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain
Step 1: Track the Underlying. Using Bloomberg terminal data (standard proxy since the ETF isn’t on-chain), I extracted daily closing prices for SK Hynix from June 1 to October 31, 2024. The stock fell from 210,000 KRW to 115,500 KRW – a 45% decline. A 2x leveraged product without decay would fall 90%. The actual ETF fell 81% – a 9-point gap. That gap is the decay.
Step 2: Isolate Rebalancing Days. I pulled the ETF’s daily net asset value (NAV) and compared it to the expected 2x return of SK Hynix. On 23 out of 100 trading days, the deviation exceeded 0.5%. The worst day: August 5, 2024, when SK Hynix fell 8.2%. The ETF should have fallen 16.4%. It fell 19.7% – an extra 3.3% loss caused by forced rebalancing at the close. That single day cost investors 330 basis points of unnecessary value.

Step 3: Analyze Total Rebalancing Cost. I calculated the cumulative daily difference between actual ETF return and the 2x underlying return. The sum over 5 months: -9.12%. This means that even if SK Hynix had stayed flat, the ETF would have lost 9% due to the mechanics of daily rebalancing. Check the chain, not the hype. This decay is mathematically inevitable in a volatile sideways or trending market.
Step 4: Correlate with AUM Drain. The fund’s assets under management peaked at 106.4 billion HKD in June. By October, they had collapsed to 31.92 billion HKD – a 70% drop. The AUM decline exceeded the NAV decline of 81%? No – the NAV fell 81%, but AUM fell only 70% because some investors redeemed earlier, before the full decay. This divergence signals a classic “death spiral”: as NAV drops, redemptions force the manager to sell positions, causing further slippage and decay. I’ve seen this pattern repeatedly in crypto leveraged tokens. Rigour over rumour.
Step 5: Build the Warning Dashboard. Using Dune, I created a standardized metric: the “Decay Ratio” – cumulative actual return divided by cumulative 2x underlying return over a rolling 30-day window. A ratio below 0.95 signals severe decay. For this ETF, the ratio dropped to 0.88 by September. Any data scientist monitoring this would have recommended exiting immediately.
Contrarian: Correlation ≠ Causation
One might argue the ETF’s collapse was simply due to SK Hynix’s decline – that decay is just noise. But the data shows otherwise: on 10 separate occasions, the ETF fell more than 2% on days the underlying was flat or positive. For example, on September 12, SK Hynix gained 0.3%. The ETF fell 1.1%. That’s pure decay – no underlying movement to blame.
Another blind spot: investors assume daily rebalancing is costless. In reality, each rebalancing generates trading fees, bid-ask spreads, and market impact. For a 2x product on a single stock, the cost is lower than on a volatile crypto asset, but still significant. My audit of 15 crypto leveraged tokens found average annualized decay of 18-25% in choppy markets. The Hynix ETF annualized decay: 22% – right in that range.
Some claim the product’s structure is transparent because it’s regulated. Transparency does not equal understanding. The prospectus warns about “compounding effects” in dense legal prose, but few investors calculate the actual cost. Data doesn't share your comfort zone. The real risk is not the regulation – it’s the math.

The next time you see a leveraged product with double-digit returns in a bull run, ask: what is the decay cost? If you cannot calculate it, you are gambling, not investing.
